As we approach the colder months, many of us may be looking into getting filler treatments to look our best for the upcoming holiday season ahead. However, filler treatments can be affected by extreme temperatures, but does this involve winter weather?
Can the cold weather affect filler treatments?
Cold weather has no negative impact on the results of dermal filler treatments. Our body is a great insulator and works hard to regulate the temperature within our body and keep us warm when temperatures drop.
But there are some normal side effects from filler that could be exacerbated due to the winter months. These will not ruin the results of your filler or damage them, but may feel uncomfortable.
The side effects are:
Redness
In the winter, your face will usually turn red whether you have had filler treatments or not. This happens because more blood flows to your cheeks as an attempt by your body to warm the skin. Although, if you have had filler, you may experience more redness than normal.
Bruising
This is a normal side effect for many after receiving filler treatments but due to an increased blood flow in the skin, you may also experience more notable bruising than normal.
Tenderness
It is also normal to feel some tenderness in the skin after a filler treatment and this can last for a few days. The cold weather can exacerbate this feeling.
What extra precautions should I take?
Even though the cold weather has no real risk to the results of fillers, the cold weather affects the skin in general, causing it to become sensitive and prone to becoming irritated. It’s important that you incorporate a few extra steps to not only protect your skin after filler treatments but also in general when the temperature drops.
Here are some tips on how you can your skin protected:
Moisturise
The air in winter becomes a lot drier, resulting in drier, duller and itchy skin. If you are itching your skin on a regular basis after receiving fillers, it could inflame or irritate the injection site and negatively impact the results of your filler. You should be moisturising at least once or twice day. Moisturising also aids in building a strong, healthy skin barrier.
Limit time outdoors & apply SPF
The first 2 or 3 days are the most vulnerable time for your skin after receiving fillers. To reduce worsening any side effects of filler, reduce your time outside until any issues like bruising or tenderness has gone down. If you do spend time outdoors however, it is vital that you use SPF even if it isn’t warm or sunny outside. Sun exposure without SPF could undo any issues you were trying to fix with dermal fillers like signs of ageing. If your skin becomes damaged from a skin problem such as a ski sunburn, then you also increase the risk of infection at the injection site. You should use a SPF of at least factor 30 or above.
Hydration
It’s just as important to stay hydrated in the winter and after receiving filler treatments than it is to moisturise frequently. Moisturising works to add hydration on the outer, top layer of the skin whereas drinking plenty of fluids works from the inside to hydrate all layers of the skin. You should be drinking around 8 glasses of fluids a day.
