What Acne Scarring Treatment is Right For You?

By June 12, 2023No Comments

Acne can often cause scars that form when breakouts penetrate deep into the skin, damaging the tissue under it. If acne scars are getting you down, acne scarring treatment, may help.

There are a few different types of scars, but the most common type caused by acne breakouts is atrophic scars.

There are 3 types of atrophic scars:
  1. Boxcar – These scars are U-shaped and have a sharp edge to them. They are often shallow or deep but the shallower they are, the better they respond to skin surfacing treatments such as microdermabrasion.
  2. Ice pick – Often a narrow, V-shaped scar that is deep in the skin. They look like small round/oval holes, similar to a chickenpox scar. This kind of scar is the most difficult to treat as it is under the surface of the skin.
  3. Rolling – These are wide depressions with round edges and have a wavy texture.

How can I treat acne scarring?

Treating atrophic scars can vary depending on the type of scarring you have and on factors such as how deep the scar is and your skin colour. Acne scarring treatment may be unsuitable for darker skin types due to the high amounts of melanin, this causes hyperpigmentation to fade slower in comparison to lighter skin tones. There are a variety of options when it comes to acne scarring treatment, which we have listed below.

What acne scarring treatments are there?

Skincare

Sun protection can limit the contrast between scarred skin and unscarred skin. It prevents dark spots and scars from becoming darker. There are also medicated creams available over the counter such as azelaic acid that reduces inflammation and gently encourages cell regeneration so that your skin heals quicker and scarring is limited.

Retinoids

Topical retinoids smooth out the texture of scars and speed up cell turnover. It reduces discolouration, resulting in scars looking less noticeable. However, retinoids make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so it is recommended to wear sun protection daily. You can find creams and serums over the counter, but a healthcare professional can prescribe a higher concentration if needed.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion uses a rapidly rotating device that removes the top layer of skin. This skin layer then grows back, smoother. With this method, surface scars may be removed completely, and deeper scars are less noticeable. Some side effects can vary from changes in skin colour, especially if you have deeper skin tones, redness, swelling and other skin reactions.

Chemical Peel

This treatment involves applying a chemical solution that removes the top layer of the skin, which will make it grow back smoother.

Chemical peels can range from light, medium to deep depending on the severity of the scar:

  • A light chemical peel can be repeated every 2–5 weeks and removes the top layer of the skin. It is used to treat acne, uneven skin tone and dryness.
  • A medium chemical peel removes not only the top layer of the skin but also the upper area of the middle layer of the skin. It may be needed to be repeated to remove scars completely, and is used to treat acne scars and uneven skin tone.
  • A deep chemical peel removes skin cells deeper than the top and upper middle layer. They will not need to be repeated for effective results.
Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to raise sunken areas around acne scars. Fillers with hyaluronic acid are the most common as it is a natural occurring substance within your skin, and it supports the production of collagen, which helps new cells grow and strengthen the skin barrier.

They can be used on areas of the face such as the cheeks, lips, chin and around the mouth. Dermal fillers need to be injected every few months to retain the results.

At Refine, we offer a range of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that can help improve the appearance of acne scars, including HArmonyCa and Restylane.

Restylane Vital Light Skinbooster

We also recommend Restylane Vital Light Skinbooster, which is an injectable that improves the skin’s quality and appearance. It hydrates, increases elasticity as well as firming and smoothing the top layer of the skin. It is suitable for a wide range of age groups and skin types. This product is ideal for anyone wanting to improve their skin complexion, acne scarring, and sun damaged skin.
