What is a PDO Thread Lift?

By January 21, 2022October 7th, 2022No Comments

The PDO Thread Lift is a minimally invasive treatment that involves PDO threads – also known as PDO sutures or PDO filaments – inserted into the skin to lift and tighten loose skin for a younger, smoother and healthier appearance.

What makes PDO threads stand out from the crowd?

PDO stands for Polydioxanone, a very strong polymeric suture material used by surgeons to stitch up internal tissues. What makes PDOs different from other materials is that they are biocompatible.

PDOs can be adjusted into precise angles that mimic the natural contours of facial features, before being left under the skin to lift sagging tissues upwards. Over time, this provokes the body’s ‘healing response’ and increases the production of collagen to targeted areas, helping to keep our skin voluminous and supple.

The threads are also absorbable, meaning there is no need to remove the product once treatment is fully complete as they will remain under the skin for 6 to 12 months until eventually dissolving.

Who is suitable for a PDO thread lift?

For many years PDO threads have been used in medical practice as a means of relaxing tendons, carrying out cataract procedures and closing wounds due to their strength and ability to maintain elasticity in any position.

PDO is currently the only suture approved by the FDA for use in facial aesthetics and is suitable for those who would like minor facial rejuvenation without undergoing surgery.

How do thread lifts work?

Beforehand, a topical numbing agent and local anaesthetic is applied to the treatment site for a painless experience.

Next, PDO threads are inserted under the skin via blunt tip needles called cannulas, minimising any damage to surrounding tissue. Once put in the correct position, they act as anchors by lifting the skin for precise results.

This process will take around 8 weeks to induce new collagen growth, but long-term results may last up to two years or more!

The benefits of a PDO thread lift

No downtime: No incisions are made during PDO thread lifts, allowing patients to get up immediately after treatment and return to work within hours. Treatments typically last around 30 – 60 minutes.

Affordable: A PDO thread lift is a relatively affordable option for lifting sagging features that last years. The average cost of PDO thread lift procedures varies from £300 – £2,500 depending on the number of threads used. However, this price range does not include possible touch up treatments required to maintain results.

Natural-looking results: The threads naturally blend in with surrounding facial tissue, which means they are immediately less visible than stitches or surgical scars. A PDO thread lift can smooth away wrinkles, jowls, neck bands and correct drooping cheeks to give the patient a rejuvenated look. They are also great for treating nasolabial folds (the lines that run from the side of the nose towards the mouth, known as marionette lines).

Are there any side effects?

PDO thread lifts have a much lower risk of complications than surgical facelifts in terms of scarring, bruising and bleeding. However, minor side effects include slight discomfort, swelling, dimpling and snapping of threads due to excess movement but these can all be remedied quickly.
