Skin boosters are a quick, popular and effective treatment. But what can you expect during your appointment?

What is a skin booster?

A skin booster is an injectable treatment used to rejuvenate the skin. It is minimally invasive, and uses works when it is injected into the deeper dermis rather than just on the surface in comparison to skincare products. They are usually formulated using the key ingredient hyaluronic acid, a natural substance produced by the body the keep the skin moisturised. In a skin booster, it has been crafted to promote the production of hyaluronic acid alongside collagen and elastin.

They are often mistaken with dermal fillers, but provide different results. Skin boosters aren’t used to augment the skin, but are used to improve the appearance and texture. Read more about the differences between a skin booster and dermal filler below.

Benefits of a skin booster

A skin booster offers a vast array of benefits that contribute to the health and appearance of the skin. This includes:

  • Reducing signs of ageing e.g fine lines & winkles
  • Rejuvenating the skin
  • Refreshing the skin
  • Stimulating production of collagen
  • Increase in elastin
  • Enhances elasticity & flexibility of the skin
  • Strengthens the skin barrier
  • Reduced dullness
  • Radiant complexion
  • Smoother, less textured skin

How to prepare for your appointment

Before your skin booster appointment, it’s essential to have an initial consultation with your injector. During this, you should discuss your current skincare routine and provide details about your skin type. To minimise any complications or potential risks, you should abstain from alcohol for at least 24 hours before the appointment as alcohol can thin the blood.

In preparation for the treatment, avoid using skincare products that contain active ingredients. This includes retinols or AHA/BHA acids for at least two days before your appointment. These products increase skin sensitivity and combined with the injections for the skin booster treatment, can cause further irritation and inflammation. Excessive or heavy exercise should also be avoided as it can affect the skin’s response to the skin booster.

What happens during the appointment?

The first step in a skin booster procedure involved numbing the targeted area by using a topical anaesthetic cream. This ensures a more comfortable experience throughout the session. During treatment, a series of fine injected are used to inject into the mid or deep into the dermis. It isn’t a painful procedure but may feel slightly uncomfortable. The entire session should take anywhere between 15-30 minutes, making it a relatively quick and efficient treatment.

A course of 3 treatments, spread between 2 to 4 weeks apart is usually advised to achieve optimal results. The results can last up to 6 months but is ultimately dependant on an individual’s lifestyle, metabolism and age.

Post treatment advice

With any injectable treatment, it’s important to be aware of any potential side effects that may occur. After receiving skin boosters, you may experience redness or minor bruising at the injection site however these should subside within a few days. To soothe your skin, a clean cooling pad can be used immediately after treatment to minimise any swelling.

Applying makeup should be avoided immediately after treatment, but you can use light makeup 24 hours after the procedure if needed. You should also avoid any excessive heat or extreme cold until redness and swelling have improved.
